I have a little secret to confess to you today...
And no, I have never taken a date out in a garbage truck!
Had you thinking, though, didn't I?
My secret is that Monique and I sometimes watch T.V. on our lunch break.
We work from home, so why not, right?
Even worse than that, we'll sometimes watch this show called The Millionaire Matchmaker.
In the show, this woman named Patti Stanger helps millionaires find suitable companions and gives them dating advice to not screw it up.
Shakespeare, it is not.
Now pick your jaws up from the floor and read the rest of what I'm going to say, because it will help you convert more of the visitors to your websites and capture pages into leads.
The reason a lot of people struggle converting their traffic into leads is because they used the old "bait-and-switch" to get them there in the first place!
Take the guy in this one episode we watched the other day -- he made his millions by building a business that hauls junk from people's houses whenever they move.
He and his business partner called it "College Hunks Hauling Junk" -- pretty genius, really.
Anyway, I don't know if it was a marketing ploy or if he was "testing" his date to make sure she wasn't a gold-digger -- but he showed up for the date in one of his garbage trucks!
Even better, his idea of a "date" was to haul trash out of a house together!
Now imagine this girl's surprise when he showed up. She was all dressed up for a night on the town -- maybe he would take her for dinner and a movie, maybe a nightclub, maybe even a helicopter ride. He is a millionaire, after all!
But no, this guy shows up in a dump truck.
Needless to say, it didn't work out so well for him...
He didn't meet her expectations. And that is what it takes to succeed, whether it be on a date or with your capture page.
Meet their expectations!
Think about it, why do you search for things on Google?
You either have a problem you want more information on to solve, or you are searching for a very specific thing -- like a book, photo, widget, etc.
That's what you need to keep in mind when you set up a marketing campaign --
What PROBLEM are you solving?
So what's the equivalent of showing up for a date in a garbage truck, you ask?
You are showing up for a date in a garbage truck when you advertise one thing -- like "So-and-so's a scam" -- and when people click on your link, they see you gushing about how awesome So-and-so is and that they should buy So-and-so's book through your affiliate link.
That's a surefire way to piss some people off, just like old garbage truck Romeo did with his lovely date!
Your potential prospects don't like it.
Google doesn't like it. (In fact, they'll lay the smack down!)
And it will get you nowhere -- so don't do it!
How about you guys? Have any juicy examples of people wasting your time? I'd love to hear them in the comments section of this post! Also, feel free to share this with all your Twitter and Facebook friends by hitting the green "Retwwet" button or the blue "Facebook Share" button at the top of this post.
I am by no means a Google Pay-per-click expert, but I learned quite a bit from this guy named Jim Yaghi after I bought his course, PPC Domination. You can get it here:

This is a GREAT example of Authenticity In Action Derek … NOT…LOL
If marketing is honest … the content is high value … it delivers on what is says it is going to deliver on… oh WOW.. trust is established right out of the gate.
People do business with people that they know like and trust… someone that is willing to do a “bait and switch” deal or bad mouth someone else’s business or product is not someone that I can trust… and I would never do business with them.
You crack me up … that would be like me telling someone that I have filet mignon waiting for them and then feeding them beef stew made with tenderloin tips … same meat … but certainly not what they were expecting.…LOL
Rose, you’re exactly right…
And you’re making me hungry! LOL
Great example of old marketing vs. new marketing. Change is difficult for lots of people. They think the answer to increasing your business is to cramp your message down their throat. That’s the way advertising worked!
So now they try to do the same thing on social media. Be my friend so I can beat you over the head with my offer!!! Fortunately, there’s a mute on the TV for the old marketers and an unfriend button for the new.
Hi Gary,
Glad to see you here!
Yes, the social media spammers just don’t get it, do they?
Oh well, at least it’s easy to set ourselves apart…
Derek,
Your blog sets the stage.
In the real world you can really get people peeved if you give them the Toyota instead of the Lexus.
Driving traffic by stirring the soup and adding your spices is not professional.
Creating a strong and responsive list takes time, effort and showing them Good Customer Service.…..better known as showing them the love. (Following up and completing tasks)
Capturing others traffic by creating a stir is not residual, there is no “fly sticky paper” effect.
Like I said on facebook, that is not a list I would want to deal with. Why, because I did not develop the “Relationship” first.
As Diane would say.…..“So Be It.“
Couldn’t agree more, Kathy!
You can’t have much of a business if your list has no idea who you are!
Hey Derek, that reminds me of an over hyped launch that came out not too long ago. They really hyped up the “system” they were selling, and then when you went through the sales process it was all about the upsell.
They had choices at the bottom of each upsell page that said “yes I want to purchase so and so and be super successful” or “no I will stick with the original product and stay in the 97% of marketers that fail”.
I couldn’t believe how bad they trashed their own entry product.
Great Post Derek
Wow Chris!
That’s hilarious — I’m guessing things didn’t work out so well for them…LOL
Hey Derek
Integrity and honesty are key qualities found in Alpha Networkers.
Those who like to deceive with their false adverting methods will not prosper because they are not leaders.
Great post.
Dwayne
Definitely Dwayne,
It’s like, “OK, now that you tricked me and I can never trust you, where do I sign up?“
hi Derek,
Loved the article/post, and Millionaire Matchmaker is one of my favorite shows.. :)
The other matter of who you can trust, and who has clarity, true leadership & vision beyond paying rent today & a quick buck is an altogether other story.. a sad & expensive one till recently, for me.
I have too many sad/unfortunate stories, so i’ll just mention one so called training for $8,000 dollars paid upfront (they used the words, using other people’s money, run to the hills if you hear that.. because what it meant was using a balance transfer to pay the company, which gave me not even a way to get a refund, within a reasonable time, like a purchase would. This was not considered a purchase but a balance transfer..)
Anyhow, regardless of the money, the coaching was so bad, and felt like a wild goose chase, that i left the whole thing behind without even finishing the coaching package!!
It’s not the matter of the money, but who has a track record & a true evergreen business to model after.
Sincerely,
Talia
Thanks for sharing your experience, Talia
I’m sure this will help others who are faced with something similar.
I saw this episode, That Millionaire was a jerk. What I hated was how quick the date caved in when he “Apologized” after being told to. Dumb CHICK.
Hi Erin,
She was probably just hungry after hauling all that trash and wanted a free meal (LOL)
Derek, I’m definitely going to be reading your blog. I came across it through my Google Alerts and I was drawn right in. What a great post. I love how you used a humorous story to draw the reader in and it’s based on pop culture which no matter how us marketers try to deny it, we’re also into just as much as the average tv watcher :-)
Btw, television ain’t so evil. Movies, tv shows, and cartoons are very successful examples of marketing with mass appeal. Some of the best copywriters i know use it for inspiration, for ad copy…and well, blog posts :-)
jim
Wow, really cool, Jim!
Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment — glad to know I’m not the only one watching this stuff ;)
I definitely go for mass appeal when writing and I also try to find the humor in everything — so the world of pop culture is my oyster.
On that note, I’ve read quite a few of your postings — either on Better Networker, Lead Traffic Jam, or Jim Yaghi.com and I am always impressed by your writing style and ability to explain things through stories.
Just the other day, I saw one you had written a while ago about what motivates cavemen (aka us) to take action. That’s one of the best posts I’ve ever read.
Keep up the great work, Jim, and I’m looking forward to seeing you around here some more :)
